Braking Resistor
Dynamic braking resistorsare used on AC variable frequency drives (VFD's) to dissipate energy that is produced in the motor as the drive providesbrakingtorque to stop the motor. Thedynamic braking resistoris connected to the DC bus and will see voltages as high as 800 volts duringbrakingconditions.
And harmonic reduction purposes, you typically apply 5% impedanceline reactorsto the input of motor drives 20 hp and higher. This reduces input harmonics to 35% total harmonic current distortion (THID) or less and minimizes the effects of harmonics on motors and other devices powered off the same electrical system.
